Travel Consultants
Raised in Peru on a vineyard, Margot naturally has a good nose for wine and the national spirit Pisco. However, her appetite for new cultures and travel brought her to the UK in 2000. Soon after, she joined Journey Latin America and her experience in the Peruvian travel industry and tourism studies have been great assets to the Tailor-made Holidays department.

Margot has travelled most of the continent, but cites her travels in the Galapagos Islands, Brazil, Argentina, Chilean Patagonia and Nicaragua as her most memorable. However, for her each Latin American country is highly individual and has something unique to offer. When it comes to cuisine though, she has no qualms about picking a favourite. Margot, who admits she is a little biased –heartily recommends an array of Peruvian specialities, including ceviche, carapulcra and the zingy pisco sour cocktail.

Passionate about music, she loves dancing to the exotic and varied rhythms originating from all corners of Latin America.

My favourite place in Latin America

I love Argentina for the scenery and the wide open plains of the pampas, the delicious beef, excellent wine and fabulous leather goods, while I’m also very passionate about Cuba. However, for the most authentic Latin America experience you can’t top Nicaragua: the people are hospitable, warm and friendly, and you don’t have to venture far to get off the beaten track.

My top tips

Drink coca tea in the Andean highlands; it works wonders for the altitude sickness.

Dare to haggle when shopping in South America – it’s perfectly alright to do so.

Peruvian food has become fashionable internationally in recent years, but there are still many delicious dishes that you may not have heard of. Make sure you try causa rellena and lomo saltado – my English husband loves them!
