In her gap year, Evie hoisted her backpack onto her shoulders and set off to explore Argentina, Brazil, Chile, Uruguay, Bolivia, Peru, Panama and Colombia. Not for her a superficial visit however: she lingered in Buenos Aires to teach English for over a year and became fluent in Spanish, Portuguese and French.

She returned to the UK and was awarded a first class degree from SOAS in London, and has visited Latin America many times since, especially Colombia, one of her favourite countries. Evie is particularly drawn to the continent’s Afro-Latino culture and heritage but also especially loves the mountain scenery of the Andes, vineyards and coffee plantations.

Evie is an enthusiast for Latin American music and dance, and is also an animal lover. Unable to resist the appeal of a puppy in Colombia she acquired a loyal companion who travelled with her to Panama, Argentina and the USA, and now lives at her family home in England.

My favourite place in Latin America

My favourite place visited so far would probably be the coffee plantations in Colombia. I recently stayed in a hotel in Periera where the views across the coffee fields were incredible – huge banana plant leaves everywhere, green, lush and lots of wildlife.

My top tips

1.

Try to stay in Villa de Leyva, Colombia on New Years’ Eve – they have the longest fireworks show in the world, lasting for around an hour, as well as one of the biggest ‘plazas’ in Latin America where there will be lots of dancing to live music!

2.

When you're friendly and warm to locals they really appreciate it and do reciprocate this. If they get a good vibe from you, it’s likely they’ll go the extra mile to make your trip special.

3.

Venture out to one of Colombia’s still quite undiscovered jewel: Capurgana. It’s a small town on the border of Panama and Colombia. The arrival is a little bumpy but it is well worth it. The town is small and family-run and they sell some top-notch fruit salads. The beaches are quiet and paradisiacal and the chance of spotting wildlife is much higher than in other areas.
