To the north of Mexico City, the cobbled lanes and flower-decked plazas of Guanajuato are a delight to behold. Declared an UNESCO World Heritage Site, the city stands in a narrow gorge – a tightly-enclosed mining town in an elongated canyon cut by the river.
A unique feature of Guanajuato is its old silver-mine galleries - which are now a maze of underground roads - a fascinating example of the heritage of history being put to modern-day advantage. Guanajuato shares a domestic airport with the nearby city of León, and the nearest international airport to the hotel is Mexico City, which is about 6-hours' drive away.
The hotel is on a hillside overlooking the town, 20 minutes walk from the centre (or 5 minutes by taxi). Some rooms and public areas are decorated in elegant and rather plush European country-house style and others follow a bright Mexican tradition. There is a small garden and plunge pool for relaxing in the sunshine. The hotel serves a home-cooked breakfast but no other meals. Children under 12 not accepted.
