You cannot argue with the location of this converted 17th century convent, bang in the heart of the enchanting, old walled city of Cartagena. Roll out of the grand lobby and on to its cobbled streets, stroll along the ramparts and stumble upon shady plazas and pavement cafés.
Santa Clara has two distinctive architectural styles: graceful colonial in the main building, and a republican aspect in the adjoining annexe. Rooms look onto the old town, the sea and the beautiful central patio. The main restaurant is in what was the old refectory, and is lavishly decorated with religious and colonial art. There is also an excellent Italian restaurant serving lighter meals inside or on its terrace. The cloister is now a stunning tropical garden with a bar, perfect for sipping an afternoon cocktail. Alternatively, cool off from the heat in the courtyard pool, one of the few hotels in Cartagena to enjoy such a luxury.

“The hotel spa is a must. It’s up on the ramparts, not that you can see anything once inside. It’s soooo tranquil, and the treatments are half the price you would expect to pay at home!” Diana Henderson, Head of Product. |
