Peruvian Amazon River Cruise
Tourist class cruise
Sundays, from Iquitos
7 days, 6 nights
Your ship departs from the frontier town of Iquitos, and heads towards the meeting point of the Ucayali and Marañón Rivers, 3862km west of the Atlantic Ocean.
Shore excursions by powered launch take you along the narrow black water Amazon tributaries leading into the Pacaya Samiria National Reserve, where monkeys and sloths are often seen (see Pacaya Samiria for Park details).
Later visit a riverbank settlement and seek out the gigantic Victoria Regia water lilies.
Before the boat turns back towards Iquitos on Friday, take a morning walk along a winding path to a natural hanging bridge for a glimpse of the animals that inhabit the upper reaches of the jungle. Arrive Iquitos Saturday morning.
You will cruise on one of five classic 19th-century style vessels, measuring from 28-38m in length and accommodating from 22 to 32 passengers.
All cabins are air-conditioned, with private facilities and en suite showers. There is a hardwood dining parlour where fresh local food is served and the open-air upper decks make excellent viewing platforms.
Our comment
"The riverboats venture deep into the untouched area of PSNR. The best way to appreciate the local way of life on the river." |
