The Salkantay Trail

To Machu Picchu "through the back door"

Fully serviced camping
Daily from Cusco
5 days, 4 nights

The first 2 days of this exhilarating hike are the most challenging, as you hike around the skirts of ice-capped Mount Salkantay, at 6241m the highest peak in the Cordillera Vilcabamba. Having crossed a high pass with larger-than-life scenery of jagged mountain ranges, you will descend a valley to where tropical fruits thrive in a balmy climate. Arrive in the Urubamba canyon and your hike is crowned with a visit to Machu Picchu. Take the train back to Cusco.

Our comment

"This is a strenuous hike which combines the best of highland mountain scenery with tropical valleys, including some long, steep descents as well as exhilarating climbs. The trail leads to Machu Picchu through the 'back door'."
