Peru
Sipan
Colonial cities and archaeological sites of Peru's northern coast.
Daily from Chiclayo
5 days, 4 nights
The day after arrival at the port of Chiclayo, tour the 1700-year-old tomb of the Lord of Sipán, the "archaeological discovery of the 20th century".
Continue to the Tumbas Reales Museum where the finds from Sipán - a vast quantity of gold and silver treasures - are on display. Visit the nearby Sicán Museum.
Next day, continue by road to Trujillo (2 nights), via El Brujo, which houses richly-coloured murals discovered on a Moche pyramid.
The following morning visit Spanish colonial houses in town and the Archaeological Museum. After lunch at Huanchaco on the coast (where fishermen still use the ancient reed skiffs to negotiate the surf), visit Chan Chan, the huge adobe citadel of the Chimú Empire.
On your last day in the region, explore the Huacas (adobe pyramids), Sol and Luna. Depart from Trujillo.
How about?
Exploring more of Northern Peru you can easily combine Sipán with Cajamarca, or the remote ruins of Kuelap. | Read more about: Northern Peru
