Jungle lodges, rainforest activities and Amazon cruises

While Peru is best-known for the rich heritage of the Inca civilisation and the snowy peaks of the high Andes, almost two thirds of its land area is covered by the tropical forest of the Amazon basin.

We offer jungle lodge expeditions in two regions of Peru: Iquitos in the north, and ManĂº Biosphere Reserve and Madre de Dios/Tambopata (near Cusco).

Madre de Dios/Tambopata Region

This area is easily reached by air from either Cusco or Lima into Puerto Maldonado. The region lies on the eastern flank of the Andes. In places, the jungle rivers have high clay banks, where nutrients attract both showy birds like macaws, and mammals such as tapirs. There are several lodges a short canoe-ride from Puerto Maldonado.

The 2 and 3 night expeditions offered by the lodges are similar, with jungle appreciation walks with English-speaking guides, where the practical and medicinal uses of the plants are explained. There are 2-4 hour expeditions by canoe, by day or night, to observe the wildlife - birds, caiman and other reptiles, and mammals. All lodges offer full board, drinks excluded (other than bottled water).

Please note:   On all jungle excursions sightings of wildlife cannot be guaranteed, and the weather will determine and affect itineraries.

Iquitos Region

Iquitos is a jungle port with a million inhabitants, but the only way in or out is by air or river. The Amazon here, 3600km from the mouth, is still hundreds of metres wide, and accepts ocean-going ships. The city’s first boom came from rubber exploitation - now oil swells its revenues. It’s the starting point for jungle voyages up or downstream to Tabatinga and Leticia where Brazil, Colombia and Peru meet, and also to jungle lodges remote from the busy port's bustle..

Please note:   On all jungle excursions sightings of wildlife cannot be guaranteed, and the weather will determine and affect itineraries.

Amazon River Cruises

Travel down the River Amazon by boat, in harmony with the speed of the waters and the changing riverside landscape. Enjoy the sunlight dappled on the current, the passage of undisturbed wildlife and traditional river traffic laden with bananas, and huge tropical skyscapes.

Until recently this could only be done using native transport: you would swelter in a hammock dodging huge insects and plugging your ears against the throbbing engines - now there are a number of much more comfortable options available which will still give you an authentic experience
