Duration - 11 days, 9 nights
Day 1 Depart UK and arrive Managua.Day 2 Enjoy a scenic drive north-east of the capital into the highlands, for an overnight stay in Jinotega, with excellent hiking opportunities into the surrounding coffee farms and hills.
Day 3 Drive west to the colonial city of León, with a huge cathedral reputedly built on plans meant for the Peruvian capital Lima.
Day 4 Explore the city and the Museum of Legends and Traditions, housed in a former Somoza jail. This afternoon, visit the hervideros; steaming, bubbling mud holes revealing the active volcanic power in this region.
Day 5 Travel via the capital Managua and the Masaya Volcano National Park to Granada; the oldest city in Central America on the shores of Lake Nicaragua and in the shadow of the Mombacho volcano.
Day 6 Tour of the city with its university and colonial buildings, and then explore some of the smaller islands on Lake Nicaragua before heading south to San Juan del Sur for a night in a luxury coastal eco-lodge. Day 7 Fly via Managua to the Rio San Juan area on the border with Costa Rica, for 2 nights’ stay in El Castillo and a nocturnal caiman tour.
Day 8 After exploring the river and rainforest by boat, continue to Lake Nicaragua’s south-eastern tip and the islands of Solentiname, favoured by artists for lush vegetation and birdlife.
Day 9 Return by boat to San Carlos for a flight back to Managua and an overnight stay in the capital.
Day 10 Fly back to UK, arriving day 11.
