Daily from Los Mochis or Chihauhua
5 days 4 nights
The Copper Canyon railway is one of the world’s greatest feats of engineering, penetrating the peaks and ravines of the Sierra Madre and the Sonora Desert.
Itinerary
Drive from Los Mochis, a fishing resort in sugar-cane countryclose to the coast, to the pretty, spruced up colonial town of El Fuerte, with accommodation in a historic mansion.
Next day, board the train and climb into the Sierra Madre; overnight in Divisadero overlooking the canyon. Continue by train the following afternoon to spend the night in Creel, the major town of the Sierra. The railway is a feat of engineering skills, which passengers can appreciate as they cross the box-girdwer and cantilever bridges, plunge into yawning tunnels and climb the steep bits by switchback.
Overbight in Posada Barancas in a rustic hotel with typical mexican decoration and unbeatable views over the canyon. Continue by rail to spend the next nigth in Creel, the major town of the Sierra.
Following a free morning, continue by rail through the Tarahumara Mountains to Chihuahua where you spend the night. Chihuahua is also steeped in history, squatting in the region where Pancho Villa and his revolutionaries held sway at the beginning of the 20th century.
How about?
Breaking your journey in Creel or Divisidero to visit sub-tropical Batopilas; trekking and horse-riding can be arranged locally.
