Itinerary
Day 1 Depart from the UK, arrive same evening in Guatemala City. Continue by road to Antigua.
Day 2 City tour and time to relax in one of the charming hotels converted from colonial mansions. This was the capital of Guatemala until it was destroyed by an earthquake in 1773. Reconstruction over the years has created of Antigua the baroque jewel we see today.
Days 3&4 Drive to Panajachel on the shores of Lake Atitlán, which fills a collapsed volcanic cone. Boat trip to lakeside Santiago de Atitlán, famed for its colourful textiles and mélange of religious rituals.
Day 5 Drive to Chichicastenango – its market is one of the most impressive spectacles in Latin America. In the afternoon, drive 100km through the highlands to Quetzaltenango.
Day 6 Visit Almolonga, set among the orchards and vegetable gardens of a gorgeous fertile valley then continue to Huehuetenango (2hrs).
Day 7 Full day excursion to the mountain-top village of Todos Santos Cuchumatán, where men as well as women still wear traditional dress. Drive to Guatemala City.
Days 8&9 Short flight to Flores, stay in basic accommodation with easy access to the Mayan city of Tikal, with steep, narrow pyramids dating between 650-800 AD. You have a guided tour of the ruins and time for further visit at dawn which is particularly spectacular at Tikal: the surrounding jungle erupts with a cacophony of bird sound.
Day 10 Fly to Guatemala City.
Day 11 Flight to the UK arriving day 12.
