Drive to the vast Mayan city of Tikal, where a network of steep sky-scraper pyramids pierce the remote forest canopy. If you rise at dawn, you will experience the tropical jungle filling with the agitated scream of parakeets and the roar of howler monkeys.
This is one of the most atmospheric of all the mist-shrouded cities of the Maya.
You spend 2 nights at the basic Jungle Lodge at the temple complex itself, or at La Lancha – a group of cosy, smart thatched cottages 45 minutes from the ruins. Following a guided tour, you have a whole day at leisure to explore before returning to Flores airport on the third day.
