Countryside retreats The pretty countryside running the length of the Avenue of the volcanoes is dotted with old estates whose frequently grandiose buildings – harking back to a more opulent past – have been converted into countryside hotels.  Relatively new to tourism, they still have an authentic feel, and most are run personally by their proprietors. They offer the option of a peaceful, country base for visits to local markets and villages as well as opportunities to take part in outdoor activities such as biking, horse-riding or hiking.
