Itinerary
Day 1 Depart from the UK, arriving San José same evening
Day 2 Half day optional excursion through lush coffee plantations to visit the active Poás Volcano. Or try one of our river rafting trips.
Day 3 Drive through hazy cloud-forest via Braulio Carrillo National Park to the Caribbean coast, then by riverboat for 3-4hrs to the wildlife reserve at Tortuguero, inaccessible by road. Turtles come ashore to lay eggs (Jul-Sep), and there is year-round birdlife throughout the maze of narrow canals which run through the flooded coastal forest.
Day 4 Explore Tortuguero by boat.
Day 5 Return by air to San José (30mins), and continue by highway and track to Monteverde cloud forest. Here you have a good chance of seeing the Resplendent quetzal, showiest of the trogon family.
Day 6 Explore Monteverde with its well-laid trails and expert guides.
Days 7-8 Continue to Arenal (2 nights) where startling red lava can be seen flowing from the almost perfect cone.
Days 9-10 A 4-hour drive to the dramatic Pacific coast at Manuel Antonio. There are good hotels here, but the area is still sufficiently unspoilt to attract a variety of wildlife, including raccoons and monkeys.
Day 11 Return to San José by light aircraft.
Day 12 Fly to the UK, arriving day 13.
