Located at the confluence of the Solimões and Japurá rivers, halfway between Manaus and the Colombian border, the Mamirauá Sustainable Development Reserve is the largest protected area of floodplain forest Brazil.
The lakes, rivers and forest shelter numerous rare and beautiful species including the endangered scarlet-faced white uakari monkey, Amazon dolphins and black caiman.
Uakari Lodge, which floats on the Solimões river, has 10 rooms with en-suite facilities and limited solar powered electricity. It is reached by a one hour flight from Manaus to Tefé, followed by a 1½hrs journey by motorised canoe.
Being seasonal flooded forest, the nature of excursions depends on water levels; by the peak of the dry season (October), water levels have fallen by an astonishing 12m and more excursions are done on foot. In June, when water levels peak, it is sometimes possible to canoe beneath the crowns of the trees and view wildlife such as tree sloths at close range. |
