Tailor Made

Bolivia

Spanish Course in Sucre

Sucre is the official capital of Bolivia, known as the white city because traditionally all the buildings in the city centre are painted in the original colonial white. The isolation of the city has helped to preserve its charm and local traditions over the years.

Language Programme

  • Maximum number of students per class - 4.
  • Average number of students per class - 2.
  • Spanish levels offered - 9 levels: Low/mid/high Beginner, Low/mid/high Intermediate, Advanced, High advanced and Superior.
  • Teaching Method - Based on the 4 language skills: grammar, oral, aural and written comprehension. No English should be used in class.
  • Private Instruction - Available at extra cost.
  • Handling of advanced and superior levels - If the student has special needs it may be better to opt for private classes. If wishing to study more than the language, inform us in advance so the teacher can tailor the programme to your needs.
  • Arrival first day of class - 8:30am
  • Placement test - A written, and oral proficiency test (OPI) test the first school day.
  • Orientation - The first Monday. Information about the city, school, family life and culture. No formal Spanish classes take place the student's first Monday.
  • Class schedule - classes 8:-10:20, break 10:20-10:50, classes 10;50am-12;50pm. Sometimes in high season classes take place in the afternoon too (in this case, the cultural activities also take place in the morning). The schedule for each student is ultimately decided by the adm.
  • Getting to school the first day - The host family takes the student to school the first day (walking or driving).

School Atmosphere

  • Student's nationality - About 50% Europeans and 50% North Americans.
  • Age group - The majority are independent travellers, professionals and college students (some retirees also).
  • Facilities - School is located in the heart of Sucre's city centre, one block away from the main plaza close to virtually everything of interest within the city. Classes are in the morning or afternoon (mainly during high season). The school is a 2 story building with 8 classrooms, kitchen, a salon (for videos, etc.), a nice colonial patio and a small terrace.
  • Capacity - 40 students/day.

Accommodation

Homestays
  • Distance to school - Most families are a 20-30 minute walk from school.
  • Number of students per home - 1 to 2
  • Groups or families living together - A few homestays can accommodate this.
  • Private or shared room - Private, unless otherwise requested.
  • Meals included - 2/day (breakfast & lunch provided by host family. At lunch everything is closed including restaurants.
  • Private bath - Very few homes can provide private bath for the student.
  • Extra homestay nights - Available at extra cost. Homestay included in cost starts the day before classes and ends the day after classes end.
  • Laundry service - Provided by host family, usually once a week (reasonable quantities please).
  • We can organise 3-4 star accommodation. Please enquire for prices. Budget accommodation can be organised locally.

Family Consideration - One of the most important parts of your learning and cultural experience is the homestay. You will receive a key to the outside door and will be able to come and go as you please. You are not obliged to eat your meals with the family, but you should notify them when you will not be eating at home.
Your host family respects your beliefs and we ask that you show that same respect for theirs. It is a good idea to bring some pictures of family, friends, your house and even a map that shows where you live. These can be used to begin discussions.
Notify the director of the school of any problems or if you wish to change families (there is no charge for this).
