This fabulous trip takes you to view the magnificent wildlife of Belize’s two principal natural attractions – its bewitching forested interior and the palm-fringed Caribbean coast with its superb coral reef. Birdlife, mammals and reptiles are on display in their abundance, especially in June/July: expect tropical birds, monkeys and sea turtles. Stay in the rustic luxury of two properties owned by American film director Francis Ford Coppola – Blancaneaux Lodge and Turtle Inn.
Day 1: Fly to Belize City and drive to Blancaneaux Lodge (3 hrs) surrounded by the picturesque scenery of Mountain Pine Ridge. Stay in a thatched riverside bungalow overlooking the creek.
Days 2-4: We include a number of excursions so you can get to know the area’s natural assets and Mayan heritage. Enjoy a full day trip to the archaeological site of Caracol including a visit to Rio Frio caves and a swim in the cool mountain waters of Rio On's pools and falls. Weather and operational practicalities permitting, you may also accompany park rangers in the monitoring of scarlet macaws along the serene Upper Macal and Raspaculo rivers. This is a unique experience that allows the curious and keen birder alike to see these magnificently coloured birds at close quarters. Other birds of prey that can be spotted included the orange breasted falcon.
Days 5-8: Overland transfer along the Hummingbird Highway to Placencia on the relaxed Caribbean. This Garifuna community is typified by its colourful wooden houses raised on stilts. Stay at Turtle Inn, located 3km outside the village. Stay in a thatched sea view cottage, furnished in hand-carved hardwood. Relax on the glistening white beach and take a boat tour on Monkey River, rich in wildlife including howler monkey and the endangered manatee. During the summer months from July to Sept, hawksbill turtles nest and lay their eggs on the beach - even among the cottages. Optional snorkelling or scuba diving tours are also available on request.
Day 9: Fly back to Belize City to connect with your flight back to the UK arriving day 10.
