Nicaragua maybe the largest Central American country but it is also one of the least visited. Tourism is still in its infancy but this is a fascinating place just waiting to be discovered by adventurous travellers.
Volcanoes, picturesque lakes, unexplored mountains and vast swathes of pristine rainforest brimming with wildlife are testament to the country’s biodiversity. Visitors can hike in the highlands of Masaya National Park, stay in a jungle lodge on the banks of Rio San Juan, or enjoy the tranquillity from Ometepe Island where two its volcanoes rise from Lake Nicaragua.
Other highlights include the highland cities of Granada and León, steeped in history, art and culture. Beautiful colonial buildings and churches contrast vividly with political murals depicting the Nicaragua’s revolutionary past.
There are some glorious palm-fringed beaches on the Caribbean, not least on the simple Corn Islands. The Pacific coastline is equally unspoilt and a haven for surfers. Tucked behind a secluded beach and surrounded by exuberant forest, Morgan’s Rock offers rustic luxury while remaining true to its eco-credentials.
