TRAVEL TO GUATEMALA

You can’t help but be captivated by Guatemala. There is much to delight and surprise even the most travel-jaundiced visitor. This is a country steeped in history, proud of its traditions and culture, with breathtaking scenery.

The old capital of Antigua is a ‘must’ on any Guatemala itinerary with its cobled streets, shady plazas, and colonial houses and courtyards bursting with bougainvillea. No wonder Antigua is a popular place to learn Spanish. Its festival during Holy Week or Semana Santa is a spectacular affair. The are numerous colonial-style hotels to stay including the charming restored monastery of Casa Santo Domingo.

The scenic highlands are a brimming with natural and cultural attractions. Many locals still wear their richly-woven costumes, the vivid hues and intricate designs varying from place to place. The local markets that take place in highland villages are a fascinating hive of activity and a kaleidoscope of colour. Another highlight is Lago de Atitlán, a beautiful shimmering lake surrounded by volcanoes.

In the far north, the El Petén jungle reaches out towards Mexico and Belize. At its heart are the Mayan ruins of Tikal – a magnificent lost city where temples tower high above the forest canopy, rich in wildlife.
